Drew Barrymore and Corey Feldman Reminisce About Steven Spielberg Setting Them Up on a Date

Drew Barrymore and Corey Feldman reconnected on her talk show this week after not seeing each other in 25 years.

The former couple had a little reunion on Wednesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, during which they reminisced about how their young love first came to be. Recalling their history together, Barrymore said, “We partied, we didn’t party,” to which Feldman rejoined good-naturedly, “We got sober together, we got un-sober together…” The Goonies star went on to add that they “were literally kids” when they first met, explaining that he was between 12 and 13 and the talk show host was just 10 or 11. Feldman also had to remind Barrymore that they were first put in touch by Steven Spielberg, who gave both child actors their big break and is also Barrymore’s godfather.

Feldman recalled, “What happened was, I got a call one day. My grandmother says, ‘We got a call from Steven [Spielberg]’s office, and the little girl from E.T. wants to meet you because she’s got a crush on you.’” This jogged Barrymore’s memory of their first date and she added, “Oh yeah, I did, the biggest. But everyone did!” She added that her mom Jaid Barrymore then coordinated a “play date” for the two of them. Feldman said, “Of course, neither of us drove because I was still living at my grandparents’, and you were living with your mom,” and Barrymore noted that they were also both “years away from getting our licenses.” The actor continued, “And it was so cute. I remember taking you to the movies, I remember exactly which movie theater it was. We walked across the street, and you put your little hand up for me to hold. And I held your hand, and we walked across the street.” As Barrymore blushed, Feldman confessed with a laugh, “I don’t remember what movie we saw, but I remember all that.”

The pair “just stayed friends” following that first hangout, but a few years later they “dated properly.” Barrymore also shared that she tagged along with Feldman as his date to the Academy Awards in 1989 when he was 17 and she was just 14 years old. “I remember you were going, and so, I was lucky enough to be your date,” she said. “And I just threw on a cotton Betsey Johnson dress, off the rack. I don’t know how much it cost, probably $65. I remember getting there and I remember seeing people in such designer duds. And I remember looking around and thinking, ‘Oh, I’m very underdressed. I’m wearing a cotton Betsey Johnson dress. Whoops!’” Feldman, on the other hand, she said “looked so cool” as she shared a “legendary” photo of the two of them from the event. “I just thought we were having so much fun,” she said and Feldman concurred, “We were such the great little, cute little item for the three months we lasted or whatever. But it was adorable.”

Barrymore remembered, “We were so positive. You and I were such good friends. We had that kind of relationship where they say, ‘Date your friend.’ We were the embodiment of that. You were so kind, you were such a safe place for me.” While for Feldman, he said that he felt like the Never Been Kissed star was “already getting your life together,” while he was “still going through my troubles” at the time. “You got sober first; you got your act together first. It took me a few years after you,” he concluded.
